POSITION: Director of Events and Individual Giving
STATUS: Full-Time Position
LOCATION: New York City (remote is possible)

With our free classes, community-based workshops, and educational media, low-income parents develop the literacy and language skills they need to succeed in today’s world. Our research-based curriculum also incorporates child development and parenting support to help parents boost their children’s early learning, school readiness, and social-emotional growth. 

About the Position:

The Director of Events and Individual Giving is a fundraising professional responsible for executing strategies that drive audience engagement and individual giving. Specializing in event production, the Director will oversee the annual Literacy Partners Gala and produce several virtual and (eventually) in-person events each year that engage and steward current individual donors and grow our community by attracting new people to our mission.  An excellent project manager, the Director is also responsible for planning, managing, and overseeing annual and seasonal giving appeals with the goal of converting one-time event donors into recurring supporters while increasing the level of support among existing individual donors. 

Reporting to the Chief External Affairs Officer and working closely with the 7-member Development-Marketing-Communications (DMC) Department, this position is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and will join our diverse, social justice-oriented team of 28 staff and more than 100 interns and volunteers. 

Position Responsibilities 

Strategy Development

● Develop and lead strategy for acquiring new individual donors through events and other tactics
● Develop and lead strategy to engage, cultivate, and steward existing and new donors based on analysis of donor profiles and behaviors
● Produce project (campaign) playbooks that integrate and build on data from previous activities


● Work with a contracted firm to produce the annual Gala Lead the production of virtual and occasional in-person events (with the DMC team)
● Lead the production of virtual and occasional in-person events (with the DMC team) 
● Recruit readers/panelists/honorees
● Work with DMC colleagues to produce relevant print and online marketing materials
● Manage vendor contracts and relations
● Manage budgets and financial reporting

Individual Giving

● Develop and implement strategies to move individual donors along the ladder of engagement (from passive follower to contributor to advocate to champion)
● Oversee DMC staff responsible for managing and reporting donor-related data, maintaining mailing lists and segmenting audiences for each fundraising campaign
● Oversee fundraising campaigns and donor stewardship mailings from concept to execution
● Manage prospect research, cultivation, and stewardship (including one-on-one engagement)

Required Experience

● At least two (2) years experience in a related position
● Produced at least 2 public virtual events (with attendance of 100+ people)
● Produced at least 2 in-person events (with attendance of 100+ people)
● Experience producing literary events, engaging authors and readers strongly preferred
● Proven fundraising success with individual gift solicitation (e.g. cultivation and stewardship)
● Demonstrated experience using data to strategize and implement campaigns
● Track record of measurable results in revenue growth
● Excellent communications skills (written and oral)
● Demonstrated success working collaboratively with colleagues
● Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as needed
● Ability to travel as needed within NYC (e.g. venue site visits, tastings)
● Has a sense of humor
