The Science of Reading for Parents
The Science of Reading and the Critical Role of Families
As schools revamp their literacy instruction to embrace the science of reading, the family’s role becomes even more important. Parents need a better understanding of how children learn to read and specific actions they can take at home to support their children’s journey to proficient reading.
At Literacy Partners, we understand the unique challenges that families face and our workshops have produced meaningful results for thousands of families and dozens of school and community partners.

“In the Science of Reading workshop, I learned valuable strategies to promote my child’s reading development, such as the importance of being able to create a safe space where my daughter can explore her greatest potential without being afraid of making mistakes”.

“ I feel like one of the most powerful parts of our methodology is the Closing Circle, where we ask the mommies: What did you learn today? I remember that one mom replied, “I’ve never been asked this question directly and today I learned that my participation matters a lot”. This brought a couple of tears to my eyes because I realized that we are actually connecting with them on a deeper level.”

“Any school that is considering this program for their parents: stop thinking about it and DO IT! Literacy is everywhere, and no matter the language, parents and students alike can always benefit from continuing their knowledge of incorporating literacy learning into their everyday lives.

“I enjoyed meeting other moms and getting tips from them in the breakout rooms. I am also now practicing reading wherever we go. We were at the pharmacy and I had them read that. I give this program a ten out of ten. I would recommend it to other moms.”

I have learned a lot. This has been very important because I know that reading not only exercises the brain but also allows you to learn a lot. My classmates and I have had a good experience in this workshop and I hope it continues for other moms. In the meantime, I have as a gift all the strategies I learned to help my son develop his vocabulary.”
