On Wednesday, May 24, Literacy Partners held its annual Evening of Readings and Gala Dinner Dance and raised nearly $1 million toward literacy, language, and high school equivalency classes throughout New York City.
The gala honored four individuals for their commitment to literacy: Sheila Nevins, Joanne Lipman, John Josephson, and Fareed Zakaria. The reader of the evening was actress Jill Kargman, who read from her memoir Sprinkle Glitter on my Grave.
Marchette Hellams, a professional gospel singer and Literacy Partners high school equivalency graduate, dazzled the crowd with a beautiful rendition of Patti Labelle’s “Winner in You,” echoing the theme of the evening, “Rise.”
