Uncover Illiteracy with Unreadable Books

It’s a little-known fact that 1 in 5 New York adults is functionally illiterate. Literacy Partners is teaming up with local bookstores and several authors to share that fact with the world. Together we can uncover an issue that has been kept hidden for too long.

Literacy Partners created Unreadable Book Covers to help people who love reading feel what life is like for those who struggle with it. By reading through another’s eyes, book lovers will get inspired to help out. How did we make the covers unreadable? Using existing designs, we jumbled the letters to create a disorienting layout. These books will be featured at McNally Jackson in Williamsburg for a limited time. People can support literacy by donating directly via the barcode on the Unreadable Book Covers with the store cashier, or by texting “LITERACY” to 1-844-544-7171.

We would love to expand the program to bookstores around the world. If you’re an author or publisher who would like to donate a book cover or get involved with the Unreadable Book Covers program, please contact us below.
